TikTok App Install Campaigns: Setup, Smart+ and the Creative That Works

TikTok became an app install channel because its feed does something few others do: it shows an ad full-screen, with sound, to someone who is actively looking for something new to watch. For games and apps with a strong visual hook, that is a natural fit. It also punishes ads that look like ads, which is why the creative habits that work elsewhere often need rethinking here.

This guide covers how app install campaigns are set up on TikTok, what Smart+ changes, which formats are available, and how to make creative for the For You feed. The file requirements for TikTok and Pangle playables are covered separately in TikTok playable ads.

The objective and optimization goals

App install campaigns on TikTok use the App Promotion objective. Within it you choose what the system optimises for: installs, an in-app event (such as completing the tutorial or a purchase), or value. Install optimization reaches the most people at the lowest cost per install; event and value optimization buy fewer installs at a higher cost, aimed at players more likely to stay and pay. Most teams start on installs or a shallow event, prove that the creative works, and move deeper once the event volume allows it.

Measurement has to be in place first. TikTok receives install and event data from your mobile measurement partner or its own SDK; on iOS, attribution runs largely through Apple's privacy framework, which limits how finely results can be read.

Smart+ versus manual campaigns

Smart+ is TikTok's automated campaign type: it handles targeting, bidding and creative combinations, and in its upgraded form it merges with manual setup into one flow where you choose how much to automate. TikTok's help centre notes that the upgraded experience may not yet be available on every account, so what you see depends on your account.

  • Smart+ suits campaigns with a clear optimization event and enough creative variety for the system to test. It typically needs less setup and less day-to-day management.
  • Manual setup suits tight tests (one market, one audience, a controlled creative comparison) and campaigns where you need to know exactly why something worked.

In both, creative is grouped so the system can test combinations, and TikTok's documentation describes generous limits on how many creatives a campaign can hold. As on every automated platform, more creative is useful only if it is genuinely different. Twenty edits of one video teach the system less than four different ideas.

Creative formats for app installs

In-feed video

The main format: a vertical, full-screen video in the For You feed with your app name, a caption and an install button. Vertical 9:16 at full HD is the standard; keep the key action in the centre of the frame, since the caption, profile and buttons cover the bottom and right edges.

Spark Ads

Spark Ads promote an organic post, either from your own account or from a creator who authorises it. They keep the post's likes and comments and look like ordinary content, which tends to suit TikTok's audience. UGC and creator ads for mobile games covers briefing creators for them.

Playable ads

TikTok offers playable ads for the App Promotion objective, with install, app event and value optimization. According to TikTok's help centre, playables run in the upgraded Smart+ campaigns, appear as video creatives in the For You feed, and report performance at creative and ad group level. The playable itself is a ZIP under 5 MB with index.html at the top level and a config.json that sets the orientation; it must not load mraid.js, redirect with JavaScript, or load anything from the network. Pangle, TikTok's in-app ad network, accepts playables too, in interstitial and rewarded placements.

Making creative for the For You feed

The habits that work on TikTok follow from how people watch it: fast, vertical, with sound, swiping away from anything that feels like an interruption.

  1. Hook in the first second. Open on the action, the problem or a face, never on a logo. See the first three seconds.
  2. Look native. Shot-on-phone footage, creator voices and on-screen text in TikTok's style usually beat polished trailers.
  3. Use sound deliberately. A voice explaining what is happening, or a satisfying sound effect timed to the action, does work that captions alone cannot.
  4. Show real gameplay. TikTok's audience is quick to call out ads that misrepresent a game in the comments, and mismatched expectations show up as poor retention. See policy and misleading ads.
  5. Make more than you think. Creative fatigues fast on TikTok, so plan a steady flow of new concepts rather than a few big productions.

Common mistakes on TikTok app campaigns

  • Running the same cut-downs made for other platforms. A horizontal trailer letterboxed into a vertical frame reads as an ad within a second and is swiped away.
  • Judging too early. Automated delivery needs time and conversions to settle; turning off a concept after one day mostly measures noise.
  • Optimising for an event the campaign cannot reach often enough. If the system sees too few of the chosen event, it cannot learn; start shallower and move deeper.
  • Letting a winner run unattended. TikTok creative tends to fatigue faster than on in-app networks, so have the next variants ready before the current winner slows down.
  • Ignoring the comments. On TikTok the comments under an ad are public feedback on the creative, and complaints that the ad does not match the game are an early warning about retention.

Most of these come down to the same thing: TikTok rewards treating creative as a continuous stream rather than a set of finished assets. Budget for production as part of the campaign, not as a one-off cost before it.

A simple test structure

For a first campaign, pick one market, one optimization goal and four to six distinct concepts: for example, a gameplay montage, a creator reaction, a challenge, a satisfying-process clip, and a playable built around the core mechanic. Let them run long enough to leave the learning phase, compare on cost per install and on day-one or day-seven quality, then make variants of the winner and new concepts to replace the losers. Playable ad A/B testing has the full method.

Where TikTok fits in a channel mix

TikTok rarely carries a game's whole acquisition. It works best alongside in-app networks, where playables and rewarded video reach people already playing similar games, and alongside Meta and Google, which reach broader audiences. A concept that wins on TikTok is often worth adapting for the others, and the reverse is true too. The best ad networks for mobile games compares the main channels.

Playable Ads Maker exports a TikTok playable as the ZIP TikTok asks for, with config.json and the window.openAppStore() store call in place, from the same project that exports to Pangle and the other networks: 13 in all.
