Tool Comparison
Playable Ads Maker vs Google Web Designer
Google Web Designer is a free desktop app primarily suited for Google ecosystem HTML5 display ads. It can produce simple tap-to-reveal interactive creatives, but real game logic requires hand-coded JavaScript and MRAID delivery to non-Google networks requires developer post-processing. Playable Ads Maker is a browser-based no-code tool with built-in game templates and single-file MRAID export for 12 networks.

What Google Web Designer does
Google Web Designer is a timeline-based HTML5 animation tool with two editing modes: Quick mode (scene-to-scene transitions, simpler workflow) and Advanced mode (full keyframe timeline, similar to a simplified Adobe Animate). It produces HTML5 ZIP files containing the ad HTML alongside referenced asset files.
For interactivity, GWD provides built-in components: tap areas, gesture detection, galleries, sprite sheets, page navigation (gwd-pagedeck), and a limited particle effects component. These cover simple interaction patterns: tap to reveal the next scene, swipe through a gallery, or trigger an animation on a user gesture.
For game logic beyond these components, GWD provides a Custom.js file and an Events panel where you write named JavaScript functions with access to the full browser DOM and component API. There are no visual scripting tools, no node graphs, and no built-in physics, game loop, or collision system. Any real gameplay (scoring, state management, real-time player mechanics) requires hand-written JavaScript.
The MRAID gap for non-Google networks
Delivering playable ads to Meta, AppLovin, Mintegral, Unity Ads, TikTok, and other major mobile networks requires MRAID compliance: a single self-contained HTML file with all assets (images, fonts) encoded as base64 data URIs inline, and a mraid.open() call wired to the CTA button.
GWD does not produce this format natively. Its "Inline local files" export embeds JavaScript and CSS inline but leaves images as separate referenced files. The "Non-Google Ad" environment mode exists but GWD's own documentation warns additional changes may be required. There is no automated "export for Meta" or "export for AppLovin" workflow.
Adapting GWD output for MRAID networks typically requires a developer to: convert image assets to base64 data URIs, rewrite asset references in the HTML, add the MRAID script reference, wire mraid.open() to the CTA, and validate against each network's specific format requirements. This process must be repeated for each network.
Google Ads playable: format constraints even within Google
Within Google's own ecosystem, GWD's playable ad output for Google Ads (App campaigns) is constrained: maximum 5MB ZIP, maximum 512 files, and only four approved interactive components (Swipeable Gallery, Carousel Gallery, 360° Gallery, Image Button). External JavaScript libraries beyond Google Fonts, jQuery, GSAP/GreenSock, and CreateJS are not permitted.
Where Google Web Designer is strong
Google ecosystem: the native first-party tool
For Google Ads (Display Network, App campaigns), Display & Video 360, and Campaign Manager 360, GWD is Google's official creation tool. It has direct publish integration, built-in format validators for Google's requirements, and component support actively maintained by Google. For teams running exclusively in the Google ecosystem, that integration is an advantage.
Rich-media HTML5 banners
GWD is well-suited for expandable banners, interstitials, and rich-media display ads on Google networks. Its timeline animation system and CSS3 3D transform support produce good results for designers who understand HTML/CSS.
No subscription cost
GWD costs nothing to download and use. For small teams targeting only Google Ads with developer capacity to handle custom JavaScript and network adaptation, the zero software cost is an advantage. The trade-off is that developer time for game logic and MRAID adaptation is a real cost, just not a software line item.
Designers who write code
GWD includes a code view with syntax highlighting and autocomplete. Designers comfortable with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript will find it a capable environment for bespoke interactive experiences, and more flexible than a template-based tool when the developer is willing to build the logic themselves.
Where Playable Ads Maker differs
No-code game mechanics
Playable Ads Maker's game template library includes 111 genres: match-3, water sort, merge, bubble shooter, spin wheel, whack-a-mole, and more. These are working interactive game mechanics, not tap-to-reveal banners. No JavaScript or code view required. Every plan, Free included, re-skins and exports any of the 254 prebuilt playables in the library, and building one from scratch in the editor is Agency, at $349.99/month billed monthly.
Single-file MRAID export for 12 networks
Playable Ads Maker exports a single self-contained HTML file with every asset travelling inside it, MRAID wiring handled automatically, and per-network output for all 12 supported networks. No developer post-processing is required. The Export modal generates network-specific files from a single project in one operation.
Browser-based, no install
The editor runs entirely in a browser. Nothing to install, no system requirements, no project files to share manually. Cloud-saved projects are accessible from any device on any operating system.
Video playable editor with Break System triggers
The Video Editor lets you layer interactive trigger points directly onto an uploaded video, with no coding. The Break System pauses playback at configured timeline moments and requires viewer interaction to continue: a tap, a hold gesture (Break Hold, where the viewer must keep their finger down for a set duration), or following a path shape on screen (Break Hold Path: ellipse, rectangle, figure-8, or custom drag-positioned points). Double-tap is also available as a trigger mode. The result is a video ad where the viewer has to do something to reach the gameplay or end card, rather than watching it play through. The entire interaction layer is configured visually in the editor and exported as part of a single MRAID-compliant file. GWD has no equivalent interactive-overlay- on-video workflow, and wiring anything equivalent in GWD would require custom JavaScript.
Particle FX: 29 named presets with physics
Every plan, Free included, has a particle FX system with 29 named presets: confetti, coins, sparkle, fireworks, level-up bursts, embers, aurora and more. Each is configurable (emitter shape, particle count, speed, lifetime, size, color mode), and custom physics (gravity, air drag, lifetime force curves) is on every plan too. Exported ads run the particle system inside the ad itself, with nothing loaded from outside. GWD includes a particle component, but it has no preset system and no physics controls, so each effect has to be set up by hand.
